Why Style Africa Loves Marianne Fassler…
Marianne Fassler is easily one of the continent’s best designers. That may seem like a careless sweeping statement, but it’s not. For over 20 years, she has fully embraced her unreserved originality, allowing it to shine – fully splayed out – across our runways. It has served her well: Fassler’s shows have been receiving rave reviews from as far back as 1998. The look and feel of the brand is not a subtle statement for which the source of inspiration must be derived or guessed at. It is diverse, yet fully comprehensive; a beautiful voice that shouts without reservation: “I am African.”
The thing that makes Leopard Frock so special is not that Marianne chooses to portray Africa in her clothes, but how she does it. She is a master of juxtaposition, creating harmony in colours and textures that are worlds apart. She illustrates Africa to be a vibrant beautiful place with more than one story to tell. Her latest collection, titled ‘Vote Fassler,’ was not just well timed and well named (for South Africa’s recent national elections), it was also very well displayed. It was impossible to be distracted as abstract plaid & leopard prints paired with unorthodox cut & metallic texture made their way down the ramp. The cherry on top is the honesty of the collection. Fassler’s bold pieces are never the kind created purely for shock value, but the kind that tell a true story.
Over the past few seasons, the rest of the world has started to look to Africa more and more for inspiration. We love Marianne Fassler for having the right idea over 20 years ago. Marianne and the Leopard Frock team are currently working toward a special showcase at the brand new Africa-Malaysia International Fashion Show this September. Expect the unexpected.
